Gastronomy in Ghana: La Chaumiere

This one was long overdue. One of my favourite restaurants in Accra, La Chaumiere was open for business at lunch as usual. The food as always was superb. They have a wonderful chef who always manages to consistently reproduce the menu without disappointing. I met some friends for an impromptu lunch which turned into one of those long Mediterranean meals. La Chaumiere is a French-Mediterranean restaurant on Liberation Road.
It is very popular, for lunch and dinner and it is always wise to book ahead in the evenings. A drink at the bar served with their peanuts and olives is always a good start  - wine list is extensive, with French wines and a handful of Chilean and South African wines. Their menu offers a wide selection of starters, and a seafood and meat menu that's varied and interesting; profiteroles and creme brulee are just a few of their dessert choices. I never make it as far as the dessert menu, as  I never miss my starter when dining there.

Today was no exception. Two of dining companions were running late so I was given carte blanche to order for them. We started with their lobster tails in ginger butter, and my friend had the shrimp cocktail - were weren't disappointed by either - plump and juicy for both. We decided to forgo the usual menu and went straight for their specials, ordering the duck, beef fillet with a mustard sauce  and my best selection of the day, the trout in burnt butter. It was creamy - yes creamy, and not because of the butter, but the taste of the fish, firm and perfectly done. Their prawn curry, also a favourite of mine, in a red Thai curry was served up with rice.
The table was brought a selection of vegetables; steamed, creamed spinach and sauteed potatoes. We were all too full for dessert after. Plates cleaned, appetites sated and all smiles we went about the rest of our day after our Mediterranean meal. Definitely not to be repeated again, for at least a couple of weeks, for the sake of our waists.

Bright decor with colorful artwork decorating the walls; a friendly host and extremely friendly staff makes this one of the best restaurants in Accra in terms of the quality of the food and service. Be warned though as the service can be slow sometimes, but the wait is often well worth it. The charming host and owner  often tempts with that last night cap - after a long dinner, of wine and good food, this is often the one that keeps you coming back  for more.
