Gastronomy in Ghana: Bella Roma

A lounge bar that combines a delicatessen and a restaurant all under one roof. Bella Roma has managed to draw crowds given it has only been on Accra's scene for just over a year. Their attempt of a Mojito is commendable - you just have to make a special request for the crushed ice, and the ambiance is - to borrow from my daughter's vocabulary - cool. It's one of those places where you will hear the strains of Cafe Del Mar over the music system one day and Cuban sounds on the next and it feels like you could be anywhere in the world.
The bar area has a rustic feel to it - with the seating moulded from concrete and giving it that warehouse feel, although still comfortable. The lounge area has basic wooden stools that get moved to the side as the evening turns from lounge to night club. There is a VIP section that can be booked in advance if you're keen on that 'VVIP' feel.

The restaurant offers an extensive menu of pastas, pizzas and antipasti -with small snacks in between for the light meals. I love their tempura prawns with vegetables in an orange sauce - it's a starter that's well presented and tastes great. Do try their lobster pizza - on a thin crust, good quality cheese and fresh basil. I have single-handedly now judged it the best in Accra!
Bella Roma is one of those places you can stay the whole night - starting with drinks in the early evening, moving on to dinner and then dancing into the early hours of the morning. Jazz night on Tuesday evenings adds variety to Bella Roma's lounge and club offering. The ever-present manager and host have ensured an establishment that's keeping people going back for more. An Italian delight in Accra's Osu.
