Places in Ghana: Aburi Botanical Gardens

Barely forty minutes out of Accra, and you can find yourself surrounded by tropical forests and astoundingly beautiful flora, limited fauna and surprising bird life...we came across turkeys on our walk.
My daughter, on realising how green and lush everything was asked whether they watered it...I guess it is difficult to make the connection that we are living in a tropical country when all you are dealing with on a daily basis is the heat, dust, smog and humidity.
The air smells fresher, cleaner and you get a full appreciation of the enormity of the vegetation and trees when standing dwarfed by the giant strangler ficus tree in the background.
An entrance fee of Ghc5.00 is charged to foreigners and a lesser amount to locals at the gate, but after that you are free to wander, hike, or simply lay out your picnic blanket and enjoy the fresh mountain air.
On a good day - that is without traffic- it should take between 35 and 45 minutes; we went on a public holiday so the road were fairly quiet, but ours was a meander getting there because we got lost immediately after the Atomic Junction circle in Legon and ended up driving through Berekuso, Ayim, Agyementi, Kitase and Gyankama. Circuitous yes, but definitely scenic - if a bit bumpy.
If you stay on the main road it is a straight drive on tarred wide roads.
