Of Stationery and School Uniforms

Now that the school holidays are almost over and the madness of getting school uniforms and sorting out stationery kicks in it has hit me how convenience is not a word one can easily associate with living in Ghana. Yes, admittedly in as far as living in Africa goes, Ghana is 'Africa for Beginners', but there are constant reminders that convenience is hard to come by at times.

The convenience of one supplier of school paraphernalia; uniforms, shoes and bags under one roof is not  available, but I do have a number of recommendations that have proven invaluable.

Kingdom Books - which was formerly in Osu has relocated to Beach Road in brand new and bigger premises is the best place for one's stationery needs. You can pretty much find everything here, even Moleskine notebooks; which for an aspiring writer always make me feel like I'm in good company; They are touted as the legendary notebook of Hemingway, Chatwin...
Game and Shoprite at Accra Mall are also well-stocked although they do tend to run low on their stock and range at times.

My youngest starts reception this year, which puts him in the big(ger) league at school...he now has to wear school uniform.
Lumyaa Designs in Osu - which is on the same road as the Dynasty Chinese Restaurant makes uniforms ready-to-wear for all ages. They are well-stocked in GIS-required uniforms and also provide for other schools. In instances when they do not have sizes they make to measure, but their turnaround time is less than a week; this compared to the more than three weeks wait we had to endure two years ago when we used the seamstress that was then the school's only recommendation- yet one more reason why competition is a good thing!
