Every other store tempted with delights of some Basque delicacy, or pastry - leaving us with no choice but to get into the spirit of things. So we stopped at Pariès and sampled the mouchons - a type of macaroon; the owner of the 'Real Chocolate' store plied us with his piment d'espelette-flavoured nougat; Maison d'Adam - which is a famous pastry shop specializing in Basque macaroons and the delightful Basque cake became our go-to place for their takeaway goodies - we returned again, and again in the week we we there.
Just as every other store tempts you with the local pastries, every other store sells the gorgeous Basque hand-woven linen, and you cannot walk more than ten metres without passing a store selling another local produce - the espadrilles. Pare Gabia even offers to custom-make them to your specification of canvas colour and Les Sandales d'Eugenie offers them in every array of colour and size.
After watching the surfers, and having worked up an appetite, we settled for a light lunch at La Cantine d'Eugenie - where we tucked into their grilled fish, prawns and burgers. Overlooking the square of Place d'Eugenie it was the perfect spot to sit and watch the locals go about their business.
