Gastronomy in Ghana: Mamma Mia's Restaurant & Pizzeria

Sunday in our house is and has always been the day we either go all out; making a Sunday lunch with all the trimmings or going out for lunch.
Pizza Sundays have become quite popular with us venturing out to one of Ghana's best pizzerias. They have an open kitchen where you can watch the entire process from the making of the bases to the baking of the pizza, and they use a wood-fired oven.
Mamma Mia's in Osu, Accra is a almost a cliche in the way it is so very Italian.
The gingham red and white tablecloths, the Italian flag at the bar (which I noticed was missing yesterday), its support of all things Italian and its very cheery Italian owner.

The pizzas are always consistently good, their pastas are not overly ambitious but are delicious in their simplicity - spaghettti aragoste, bolognaise and alfredo  and they do have a Seafood platter which can be great but is unfortuantely not as consistent in its quality. It's a great Friday evening place for people with young families and couples alike and is almost always full for the Sunday lunch crowd. The crowd is fairly relaxed, the ambience comfortable and the staff friendly. The prices are reasonable - with pizza's ranging from GHc16.00 and their spaghetti aragoste - their most expensive pasta item on the menu will set you back GHc22.00.

It's always wise to go early on Friday nights, as most people with young kids tend to get there early - or call in your takeaway order. Sunday similarly, best to get there by 1pm to beat the crowd.

This is the first in a series of reviews that will attempt to uncover the best of Ghana's restaurants.

  1. oh and the way I miss your Sunday lunch spreads! it almost seems like cheating that you're going out for pizza on Sundays! (no matter how good it is, can it even compare to your cooking?).
so maybe leave the pizza for Friday or Saturdays. As i was reading the review, i wondered how it compared to Victoria Hotel's pizza in its heyday! :)

  2. Nothing compares to Victoria Hotel's 'Capriciosa' Pizza...that I remember which was my favourite almost 20 years later is affirmation enough;-)

  3. If you like New York style thin crust pizza, this is the best in Accra. The swordfish is plenty good as well. Their biggest problem though is consistency. Mostly the pizza is great. But, it's the other times that you regret. Pasta is very average though, and you might want to try Michelangelo's in West Airport, if pasta is what you want.

Owner I know does his best to watch over things. But, you can't be everywhere at once.

Have not heard anything about Victoria Hotel, and 2 1/2 years here I have not heard of it.
