Gastronomy in Ghana: Afrikiko Resort in Akosombo

An hour drive from Accra gives you a trip out of town and the chance to have freshwater-reared Tilapia looking out at Lake Volta. I find it interesting that although Tilapia is actually not an indigenous fish but was introduced to Ghana some ten years ago, yet has firmly become the country's favourite fish, and prepared well, it makes for a tasty fish.
Afrikiko is a small(ish) resort on the banks of Lake Volta and near the Akosombo Dam, which is popular with tourists, expats and Ghanaians alike.
Smaller than the Volta Hotel and seemingly livelier. We have not stayed there but I am informed that the rooms are comfortable and spacious, with wide expansive, well-cultivated gardens, a pool - which unfortunately on the both times I have been there has always had a group of young people clearly out on a weekend getaway and not entirely family-oriented. I am sure there is enough to keep young kids happy if in the area - the gardens are quite large.
The restaurant has great views to the lake, and is open and relatively cool. The first time we went the service was excruciatingly slow, considering it was empty - this time it was full, but the service was prompt and I must say very professional - even considering that we had an order of the Tilapia which is always made per order and takes a while to prepare. Try the river prawns in garlic, had them once and loved them. This time around I sampled their Palaver sauce with fish - a Ghanaian dish which I enjoy. There is grilled chicken on the menu, more Ghanaian dishes and of course the Tilapia. The beauty about Tilapia, is in its simple preparation - sometimes stuffed with onions and peppers, seasoned then grilled. It is then topped with a tomato and onion salsa and served with an array of starches from rice to yam.
The Volta Hotel in Akosombo offers the popular and unfortunately-named Dodi Princess boat cruises on the lake - they serve drinks and you get to see the lake, almost in its entirety.
