Places in SA: Maropeng - Cradle of Humankind

Maropeng is a Tswana word that means "return to your roots" and it is a museum dedicated to the archaeological finds of the origin of man. The area in and around Magaliesburg is called 'The Cradle of Humankind' as it has produced the largest and oldest number of the fossil finds of hominid man ever found.
Declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1999 it now has numerous attractions for the young and old; varying from nature Reserves at The Cradle, the Tumulus building of Maropeng - both entertaining and educational for kids of all ages as well as adults and the Sterkfontein Caves.
We had been to Maropeng and surrounds before but thought it worth our while to visit again with the kids being older. A fantastic time was had by all and I recommend this place should you ever find yourself in the region looking for something interesting and different to get up to. Exhibits entail a time travel concept where you learn about early man, through to the current time and a look into what the future will look like - introducing an interesting way of introducing sustainability issues to really young kids and adults. After all this there is a restaurant that serves drinks and a full a la carte menu; with a buffet set-up on some days.
